We are coming to the end of our race--or to the sound of the starting gun depending on how you look at it. Today I'm up early to begin a list of household goods to keep out (or clearly mark) when the movers come. These are the things that we will need immediately when we move into the new house. As you go about your day, if you see something that you use repeatedly and it's not on my list, please tell me!
Hold Baggage
*Hold baggage is the Army's term for the things you send ahead by air when you move overseas. The weight is severely limited compared to the overall weight of your house. Our hold baggage has to fit in our van and car for this move.

This is a list which I'll use to pack anytime we go out of town or move so I tried to think of a variety of scenarios like trip to sisters' in winter with an indoor pool, door-to-door move, or moving to Hawaii. I'll just cross off what I don't need.

I was going to say, I really don't think you need the snowsuits, but I see this is an all-encompassing list.
A few things I think: since you will only be without your household goods for 1 day to 1 week, I think you could pack LESS kitchen stuff. For example, we let the movers take our garbage cans, and we just used garbage bags until they came. It was only a minor inconvenience for a short term, but saved us on space in the van. Same thing with dishes. I always unpack the kitchen first (try to mark the kitchen boxes so you know what's in them beyond just "kitchen stuff"), and I think we only used paper plates for a few days max.
We also went with convenience foods: frozen pizza, pre-breaded chicken cutlets, pasta, tacos with store bought shells (and not your yummy home fried ones). So I don't know if you really need measuring cups and spoons, and I definitely think you should let the movers take your cookbooks.
But maybe consider the crockpot?
Are you really going to take your school books in the van? Funny, I did the same thing, just in case I couldn't find them in time. But then in KS I told myself it was stupid since we had the whole house set up by Aug 1st. I think Bill will have more time than you are used to him having to help you with unpacking. And two hands are better than one.
Add to your to-do list to get the car and van weighed (empty and full if you have time) - there is a scale over at the recycling center. You DO know they will pay you for those school books you move, right? It usually works out to a few hundred dollars - definitely worth the extra bit of time.
Oh.my.goodness. So Dan installed a roof rack to our amazing economized silver bullet mini (read - a double stroller barely fits in the back) minivan this weekend and there is still absolutely no way we could dream of traveling with even one quarter of all that stuff! Go Rachel, go Rachel, and her big 15 passenger van...

Rachel, I LOVE this list!!! I am so going to adopt and make it my own when we PCS again, if that's okay with you ;) We've done our own moves up to this point, but we've decided to hire movers from here on out. 15 Passenger vans are the best; reading the list and envisioning it loaded into your van made me think of all the family trips we took growing up. What a can of sardines we looked to fellow travelers ;)
I love how detailed you are about everything...except "budgety stuff".
