Odds and ends

Spring, birthday season, Easter. They are coming; they are here. Here are some glimpses into our recent past:

Easter!

Charles had to narrate the Tortoise and the Hare to me for an end of the year evaluation for Mother of Divine Grace School.  First I read him a very simple version of the story, only about 10 lines long.  This is what he "retold" to me immediately after.

One day a hare said to a tortoise, "You are so slow.  I think I could beat you in a race on Sunday."  So on Sunday the hare and the tortoise went to Mass with their families.  When they got home, there was a letter from the judge asking them to meet him at 2 o'clock in the woods.

So when they got there at 2 o'clock, the judge was there with a lot of other animals.  So they began the race.  And the hare went faster, and they were trying to go for the biggest tree and back.  And the rabbit got to the biggest tree, and he was tired.  And then he ate his lunch, drank some water and went to sleep.

Thirty minutes later the tortoise arrived, and he did not disturb the rabbit so he could win the race.  So he started back and then the race had only 30 minutes to go on for. So the tortoise did a little bit faster so he could be there earlier.  When he got there, the rabbit was behind him, and the judge said, "Slow and steady wins the race."  And he got the first place cup, and then they went home.

The End.

Scouty Stuff

I must get a little caught up since we've had two birthdays already and are about to have two more.  But first I have to share:

Charles came in second at the Pinewood Derby!
He went to regionals but didn't place.

Also, 3 kids and I went "camping" with scouts this past weekend.  Unfortunately we left our house at 6:30 am Sat and were home again by 11:30 pm because of a thunderstorm.  However, we pitched a tent and then unpitched it in the dark and rain, went to Mass, ate s'mores, and had a lot of fun.  What more does sleeping in the tent add, right?
At the Catholic Camporee--Boy Scouts taught fire building, and that's what our kids did all day.

The girls loved it too!  I was in charge of helping kids make tye-dyed t-shirts so I didn't know what they were up to.   Good parental supervision, right?

Our AHG friends loaned us poles and bait so we could fish.
That is one happy camper!
Don't I look like a star bellied sneech?

Elephants

Here is some work from our budding artist:

Asian Elephants are huge.  So huge that you can't scan them right side up.

You know what this is, of course.

Who we are this week--the 10 family member version

Bill's quiet and thorough personality have made our new house hunting adventure much less stressful than it otherwise would be.  In a few weeks we hope to be homeowners.  To increase his personal fitness, his new workout plan involves lots of push ups.  He has all the kids participating too, so anytime one of them crosses from the carpet to the hardwood in the kitchen, he/she falls to the floor to do a few.  It's been pretty funny watching Joseph rock on his stomach trying to get it off the floor.

Rachel usual scattered approach to doing all things necessary is getting an overhaul by the Mother's Rule of Life.  She's hoping that in a short time she will have learned to keep the house clean, the kids schooled, the aprons sewed, and the Christmas cards done in a timely and orderly manner.

We have Thomas (11) who is fairly outgoing and friendly and in that preteen stage where he takes things seriously.  He loves legos and reading and taking pictures.  He is a little shorter than Anthony which helps telling them apart if they are together.

Anthony (11) is the compliment to Thomas so he is a little more serious and introverted and contrariwise.  He is also the one who talks about his faith more and tries to tell a lot of jokes.  He often has two problems with whatever you say and loves to tell you what they are.  He's also very gentle with small kids and seeks out the child that everyone else ignores.

Maria (10) LOVES babies and will ask about a billion times to hold any baby she meets.  She's artsy and enjoys sewing and singing.  She and Cecilia are involved in an American Heritage Girls group at our parish which is her one activity.  She and Thomas and Anthony look and act like triplets a lot of the time.  They are the "big kids".

Charles (8) is quiet and social, however those two things work together.  Everyone plays legos  here, and he's probably there in the Lego zone if he isn't wrestling someone on the living room floor and driving his mother crazy.  Charles, Anthony and Thomas are all Scouts.

Cecilia (6) is sunshine.  Or she is a golden retriever bounding up to you with her tongue hanging out.  When she is tired or asked to do what she thinks is an insurmountable task, say, sweeping the kitchen, she is a very rainy rain cloud.  She's also quite "sporty" and used to take me running when I was 9 months pregnant with Joseph.

James (4) looks either like he thinks the world is going to end or like he just won the lottery.  This week we've had a lot more of the lottery winning face which has been nice.

Joseph (2) compares well with a  butterball turkey.  He and James both wear 4T clothes and play together a lot, often with Joseph as lead trouble maker.  He's also my very cuddly guy, and I love to sit with him on my lap and just hold him.  He has just started to talk more, so if you speak monkey, you will understand everything he says.

Charles' Golden Birthday

For his special birthday dinner Charles chose:  Hotdogs

For Halloween this year Charles wants to be:  Darth Vader

For his birthday, Charles received a light saber that changes from green to red, a clone nerf dart gun, a Webkins lion, a camo Timex watch and money with which he bought himself a Webkins hippo and refills for his dart gun.

Charles favorite color is:  green

Charles still loves his fuzzy blanket that Grandma made him when he was a baby and sleeps with it every night.  He wanted to take it camping with him on his cub scout camp-out a few weeks ago.

Charles is an aggressive soccer player and keeps up with the kids on his team even though he is the youngest player.  The assistant soccer coach calls Charles "Charlie"!

Charles is excited to make his First Holy Communion next summer.

Charles turned 7 on October 7th.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHARLES!

Poetry Boot Camp

Every day after break time, the kids practice memorizing their poetry. I gently lead them through the poem, teaching memorization, dramatic interpretation, and clarity. Kids who aren't reciting are asked to sit quietly and attentively to learn "polite listening." After a few weeks at most, each child has a whole poem memorized which he then puts into a book of poetry and illustrates himself. And whenever it seems appropriate--while building wood trains for example, someone will prompt a few lines of the poem and everyone will join in as an enthusiastic chorus.

Today Thomas took over teaching while I was playing with the camera.

Charles at 6 years old

Charles is 6!

Charles is a social butterfly with lots of neighborhood friends. I was thinking I was going to have to tie him to his chair for Kindergarten this year, but he has done very well. He is even starting to read (whew!).

He plays soccer on a team with Maria and is more than holding his own.

For his birthday dinner Charles asked for hot dogs, french fries, onion rings, and milk. He helped make his chocolate birthday cake and asked for Cherries Jubilee ice cream from Baskin-Robbins to go with it.

On Monday when we visit the National Gallery, he is looking forward to seeing his favorite piece, Wassily Kandinsky's Improvisation 31 (the Sea Battle).

For his birthday Charles got a Razor scooter with green tires and grips, money, and green crocs.

Did I mention that his favorite color is green?
