Anthony's Scout Sunday Sermon

Anthony is the Chaplain's Aide and gave this talk
on a point of the Scout Law for Scout Sunday.

Through out history the human race has been endowed with a special gift: the will to help our neighbor.

Lord Robert Baden Powell the, founder of the Boy Scouts, made helpfulness and duty to God his main goal in scouting. He describes this goal by saying,

"The Scout, in his promise, undertakes to do his duty to his king and country only in the second place; his first duty is to God. It is with this idea before us and recognizing that God is the one Father of us all, that we Scouts count ourselves a brotherhood despite the difference among us of country, creed, or class. We realize that in addition to the interests of our particular country, there is a higher mission before us, namely the promotion of the Kingdom of God; That is, the rule of Peace and Goodwill on earth. In the Scouts each form of religion is respected and its active practice encouraged and through the spread of our brotherhood in all countries, we have the opportunity in developing the spirit of mutual good will and understanding.

Lord Baden-Powell then goes on by saying, "There is no religious  "side" of the movement. The whole of it is based on religion, that is, on the realization and service of God.

"Let us, therefore, in training our Scouts, keep the higher aims in the forefront, not let ourselves get too absorbed in the steps. Don't let the technical outweigh the moral. Field efficiency, back woodsmanship, camping, hiking, Good Turns, jamboree comradeship are all means, not the end. The end is CHARACTER with a purpose.

He finishes by saying, "Our objective in the Scouting movement is to give such help as we can in bringing about God's Kingdom on earth by including among youth the spirit and the daily practice in their lives of unselfish goodwill and cooperation."

Reflecting on this it is easy to see the simplest form of help can be something like helping an elderly lady across the street. Even this basic act fulfills one point of the scout law: a scout is helpful. However, we are called to be more helpful than simply guiding an elderly lady across the street. Many people have taken it to the next step, some remarkably far.

Last year scouts from this troop went around neighborhoods asking people to donate old coats, which we brought back to this church who then distributed them to people in need. Even more recently we held a blanket drive to give blankets to elderly people. Yet, we are called to be doing even more. Lately, troops in this county have been fortunate to yield many new Eagle Scouts who, in order to earn their eagle, were challenged to do a service project that they themselves planned and carried out.

I would like to share with you one in particular which stands out to me. Recently a 17-year-old scout decided to carry out an exceptional project. He elected to direct a production of “Beauty and the Beast” where every single actor was mentally disabled. He went above and beyond so that people with developmental disabilities would get a chance to be on stage. His success was spectacular. He followed the words of Isaiah, who instructed the Israelite community by saying, “If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday sun.” Is. 58:10.

Helpfulness is not simply lending a hand when convenient, but being willing to offer up a sacrifice for somebody else. Marriage is a great example because, in marriage, both spouses are called to make sacrifices for each other in their every day lives. This kind of helpfulness is the true substance of love.

In Matthew, chapter 25, verses 35-36 Our Lord gives us seven instructions on how to be helpful. These are: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, give clothing to the naked, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. Even if we cannot do these on as great a scale as the scout whom I mentioned earlier, we are still called to give as much as we can.

When serving others, we should always keep one goal in mind. That is the dedication of all we do for the greater glory of God. By this I mean we must all do every action in such a way or with such  purpose as to give glory to our Creator.

Even the scout who directed the play did not achieve the ultimate success. The only person to ever reach the highest amount of helpfulness is Our Lord Jesus Christ. He says that the greatest thing we can do is to lay down our life for our brother. In His agony and in the cross, Christ fulfilled this goal when He died for us so we might have the opportunity to go to Heaven and enjoy forever the joy of meeting our God.

In the crucifixion, Jesus achieved the ultimate level of helpfulness and happiness, and every one here, from the smallest baby to the best Eagle Scout to the holiest man is called, maybe not to offer up our lives, but to imitate Jesus Christ to the greatest extent we possibly can, whether that is by becoming a martyr or simply by helping an elderly lady across the street.

So I challenge you to go out today and the next day and the next, and find some way in which you can be helpful for your neighbor. And when you serve that neighbor I want you to offer up your sacrifice for the Greater Glory of God.

4 months later

Oct: At one month old she is already smiling.
I guess we must smile at her a lot because she is
the first baby to smile so soon. :D

November: Her hair has grown into a cute little pixie style.
I often call her "Ladybird" because she is so small and cute.

Not happy, but she did it!

Nov: Getting ready to roll

Dec: Merry Christmas Baby

Jan. 2014: 4 month old cuteness
She smiles, she laughs, she drools
We call her "Feathers" because her
hair is so light and fluffy like goose down.

Claimed for Christ

Lydia is made a Child of God by Uncle Fr. Chrysostom
Funny story about Lydia's baptism. As Chrysostom was preparing, our pastor asked which form he was going to use. Chrysostom was going to use the Extraordinary Form but in English as he had for Dominic but Msgr. demurred. The EF could only be done in Latin, he was sure, and a called to the diocese confirmed it. However, Msgr. pointed out, parts of the rite could be said in English...like in the movie The Godfather.

Lydia Pilar

One day old: The siblings arrive home

All they wanted to do was put this bow in your hair.

Every time it fell out, they put it back in.

It's purple because the Biblical Lydia was a purveyor of purple cloth.

They took tons of pictures because they were so excited to have a new baby and a SISTER!!!!

Dear Lydia, On the day you were born...

On the day you were born:

I wasn't surprised to find myself in labor. Your due date was Sept. 8, the Nativity of Mary, and I knew she would guide my labor and pick your birthday. You were born on the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary. We wanted you to have a Marian name, and Pilar is from the title, "Our Lady of the Pillar." Did we have a boy name chosen? I don't remember.

Sept. 8

On the day you were born:

It wasn't a great day for Dad to miss work. He had an important meeting to go to and no one to cover for him. Of course, when you made it clear that this was going to be your special day, Dad came home immediately and was my pillar of strength.

On the day you were born:

The midwife and I were texting from breakfast time until she called me and told me not to get into the bath because she was on her way. She didn't want me to deliver you without her.

On the day you were born:

I remember fearing a painful labor, especially transition. I worried and prayed for weeks that Mary would help me bear the pain gracefully. I hardly remember any pain and I don't think I ever had transitional labor.

On the day you were born:

I was standing and holding onto Daddy during contractions when the midwife asked me if I wanted have you in the tub. She had me sit down and showed me that you were only inches away from being born, even though I couldn't tell! She told me to just push you out, and three minutes later, you were here!

On the day you were born:

I was so excited to see if you were a girl, I didn't wait to let Daddy see first. I pulled away the towel and was so excited! We both were. Daddy had a huge smile on his face, but please remember that the midwife is not a photographer.

On the day you were born:

You and Daddy and I snuggled into bed and had a good night's sleep.

We love you, Little One.

Anti post-partum hemorrhage green smoothie

About 6 or 8 weeks before my delivery date, I decided to get really serious about seeing what I could do to avoid a post partum hemorrhage. This was pregnancy #10 and I have had serious hemorrhages several times before. I was already trying to follow the Brewer pregnancy diet and drink lots of water as a part of a healthy pregnancy diet. But the biggest change was that I drastically reduced my coffee and all caffeine intake*, and I refined the goodness in my green smoothie.

This smoothie became my morning staple. Alfalfa, kale, and chlorophyll all work to build red blood cells along with the Floradix iron supplement. Red raspberries are similar to red raspberry leaf and so are good for uterine atony. Vit K is good for clotting. I added cream or yogurt because Vit K is a fat soluble vitamin and there was no other fat in my morning food and because it tastes good. The banana and pineapple juice were simply to make it sweeter and bind the ingredients together.

Anti Post-partum Hemorrhage Smoothie

Drop 4 alfalfa pills in bottom of blender
Shove blender full of kale--ribs removed
Fill bender halfway with pineapple juice
Blend until smooth

Add 1 banana and a bag of frozen raspberries and blend until smooth. Add water to thin.

Pour into a 12 oz glass.

Add to the glass:
1 tablespoon liquid chrolophyll
1 tablespoon Liquid Vitamin K
2 tablespoons Floradix iron supplement
1-2 tablespoon  cream of full fat yogurt
Sugar to taste if it wasn't sweet enough

After a few weeks, I accidentally cut my arm. I usually have a tendency to bleed, wipe, bleed, wipe, bleed more.....this time one little dot of blood welled up on the cut and stopped. It turned a deep red and made a scab. Ok, that was so new to me that I told my midwife about it. We laughed, but it really impressed me.

I must also add that I know my spiritual preparation gave me peace and clarity as I was working to improve my diet. My brother gave me Anointing of the Sick and I asked lots of people to pray for my uterus to heal. One friend made a real sacrifice and offered it for a safe delivery. I love my friends and God has been very gracious to me. I feel His hand and the guidance of the Blessed Mother in this pregnancy and delivery.

*I usually drink at least 2 very dark cups of coffee everyday and am not super worried about how much chocolate or other stray caffeine might sneak in during the day. To be clear, sweet tea and sodas are very unusual, which is why I don't stress if they slip in occasionally. However, I read that caffeine might play a role in PPH, so I became vigilant. I reduced my coffee to less than half a cup a day and all other caffeine went from being unusual to rare. Since caffeine inhibits absorption of other vitamins, I think this was as critical as the smoothie.

The rest of the story:

When I delivered the baby, I did a home waterbirth. The CNM midwife and her RN assistant started preparing for the birth by laying out the meds like Cytotec and Pitocin  and there was an IV bag hanging near the sofa bed. We agreed that after I gave birth, I would take an oral Cytotec and get out of the tub to deliver the placenta in the bed which would make it easier for bimanual compressions and the other things if they were needed. She does not manage the delivery of the placenta as that contributes to PPH.

There was quite a bit of blood in the water after the baby came, so after a minute or so I told her I was ready to get out. I walked over to the bed and lay down holding the baby. I delivered the placenta, and we waited. And that was it. She threw away the IV and meds before she left.

My bleeding has been the lightest ever, my milk has come in amazingly fast and full, I feel great...and I'm still drinking the smoothies!

40 and 40

40 weeks and 40 years old
Overheard as I was checking birth supplies:

Maria: Is it labor of body more than of the mind?

Bill: Giving birth is not servile work!
